Goddamn Itchy Feet and their goddamn “hey students, isn’t being retro so cool!” clubnights. Don’t they know that I’ve got things I’d rather be doing on Thursday, like going to Leeds to see Warpaint? The LA four-piece made waves with their debut album The Fool, a record that was positively dripping in atmosphere thanks to its expansive-sounding guitars and beguiling vocal harmonies. If you’ve missed out on hearing it, they’ve been kind enough to stick the whole thing on Soundcloud, so have a listen. (N.B. ‘Undertow’ and ‘Warpaint’ are the wrong way round, if anyone apart from me actually cares about that sort of thing.)
Highlights include stunning opener ‘Set Your Arms Down’, the effortlessly cool ‘Undertow’, the quiet menace of ‘Bees’, and the sparse, jaw-dropping beauty of ‘Baby’. Also worth a listen is their debut EP Exquisite Corpse – check out the video for ‘Elephants’ below:
As the title of this post might suggest, Warpaint are currently on a UK Tour, and play Leeds Met Students Union on Thursday 19th May. They’ve also got plenty of European festival dates lined up over the summer too – see their full list of tour dates here.
The Fool is available now on Rough Trade.
